ONE Midtown Kitchen is a Midtown Atlanta restaurant staple. It’s American cuisine with unique twists is what had me interested in trying the restaurant. My friend Nick Love from The Bite Life and I, decided to pay the restaurant a visit recently to check out their five-course Chef’s tasting table that happens every Thursday and is curated by Chef Matt Weinstein and Chef Candler Burdett.
I am always down for a VIP Chef experience and that is exactly what you’re going to get at ONE Midtown Kitchen. This five-course menu takes you on a culinary journey featuring seasonal ingredients combined with unique flavors and textures. What else makes this a VIP experience? You can’t get any of these dishes on the regular menu! In addition to five fantastic courses, I also recommend adding on a wine pairing curated by ONE Midtown Kitchen’s Sommelier Caitlin Taglia to make the dinner complete.
First course was this delicious cherry tomato and watermelon salad that sits atop a black garlic aioli and topped with feta cheese, sesame seeds and a drizzle of basil oil. This Summer has really brought out Atlanta chef’s creativity with watermelon and my taste buds have been quite happy. I never realized how versatile the fruit is. The black garlic aioli was creamy and flavorful, the feta cheese brought a salty element and the cherry tomatoes had a mild sweetness that brought the entire dish together. It was fantastic.
The second course was black pepper shrimp with salsa verde, chanterelle mushrooms, fresh corn and peppadew peppers. The black pepper shrimp was also one of my favorite dishes of the night. It was light and the corn and salsa verde added freshness to the dish. The chanterelles were earthy, but so delicious and the peppadew peppers were spicy yet sweet.
One of the more surprising dishes of the evening was the pork belly with hummus with cilantro labneh that was topped with crispy okra. The creativity that Chef Matt and Chef Candler has really shows in the dishes. The pork belly sits on top of a creamy hummus that is also topped with a labneh sauce made of yogurt and mixed with cilantro. With all of the soft and creamy textures, the crispy okra adds some crunch to balance it out. This was a spectacular dish!
My apologies for how dark this photo is, because it does not capture how beautiful this dish was in person. Roasted duck breast is paired with Parisian gnocchi, artichoke barigoule, ricotta, spinach and peas. If you aren’t familiar with gnocchi, it is a type of dumpling made from egg, cheese and potato. It’s soft and pillowy and this one was seared ever so slightly on the outside. What I love most about duck is that it is a fatty meat so it is naturally full of flavor. The duck had a beautiful crispy skin on the outside but, was a little tough to cut through.
The final course for dessert was a chocolate creme brulee with toasted marshmallow and graham cracker crunch. I adore a good creme brulee and if you’ve been following HE for a while then you know I am obsessed with chocolate. The best way to describe this dish is s’mores but in creme brulee form!
If you are looking for an experience this is it! The five-course dinner is $55 per person + tax and gratuity and reservations are highly suggested as there are only six seats!!
In addition to the chef’s tasting, I also had a wine pairing conducted by ONE Midtown Kitchen’s certified Sommelier Caitlin Taglia. She paired all of the wine’s perfectly with the dishes! If you want to learn and explore wine for yourself, on the second Friday of each month ONE Midtown Kitchen will be kicking off it’s “Uncorked at ONE”. Beginning at 7pm, you will have a chance to explore four different kinds of wine and on this Friday September 8th they are starting things off with sparkling wine (my fav!). You will indulge in Prosecco from Italy, Cava from Spain, sparkling wine from California, and Champagne from France. In addition to delicious wine, you will also have food pairings created just for the occasion. The “Uncorked at ONE” wine experience is $40 per person + tax and gratuity.
