Sprouts Farmers Market never disappoints me with opportunities to do something fun with food. Last week, I was invited to the Cooks Warehouse, for Sprouts “Cooking Fresh Seafood” event with Chef Tregaye Fraser. Now if you aren’t familiar with Chef Tregaye, she’s the season 12 winner of Food Network Star, she’s been on Guy’s Grocery Games and she will now host her own show on the network called “The Kitchen Sink”.

Shrimp Grit Cake

Crab Cakes

The evening began with tastings of a few of Chef Tregaye’s favorite recipes which were the crab cakes with a remoulade sauce, topped with a jicama slaw and the shrimp grit cake with sautéed shrimp and a lobster cream sauce. I enjoyed both dishes a lot but the shrimp grit cake was my favorite. Using stone ground grits and heavy cream, you would prepare the grits as you normally would, adding in your cooked shrimp at the end. You then transfer them on to a pan where they will cool. Once cooled, you cut them into squares using a cookie cutter or your knife. Gently toss the cakes in egg and then breadcrumbs and lightly sear them. The panko added a nice crunchy texture, but the inside was creamy. I love dishes that are simple to make, but are still flavorful and fun at the same time.

The evening proceeded with a demo of how to prepare the shrimp grit cakes in addition to Chef Tregaye’s healthy cod and mahi mahi fish tacos. Now I had no idea that we were going to be preparing those same fish tacos later as a part of a cooking competition. SURPRISE! Lol! So we all needed to pay extra close attention to Chef Tregaye as we were expected to prepare those fish tacos and present them later for her to judge. I immediately went into competition mode and started to think about who I was going to have on my team lol. It was only right that I chose my girl Jehan, Rachel and Jennifer and we headed to the kitchen to get going. Both Rachel and I prepared the mahi mahi and the cod and Jehan and Jennifer prepared our sauces and toppings. Rachel and Jehan had the task of plate presentation.

Chef Tregaye made her rounds to taste everyone’s tacos where we were judged on taste and presentation. Take a wild guess on which team won. Yep, you guessed it, we did!! 🙂

I had a fantastic evening with my fellow bloggers, Chef Tregaye and the Sprouts team. Chef Tregaye is full of so much sass and personality and I love it. She made cooking look fun and easy. She gave some cooking amazing tips and I can’t wait to catch her on her new show to learn even more! 🙂
