When Erica Key invited me to brunch at Beetlecat in Inman Park, I had no idea what I was walking into. Normally, I would have scoped out the menu and have ideas in my head of what I wanted to order. But this time around, I walked into this restaurant blindly lol. I have to say it wasn’t a bad thing because there was surprise after surprise.
I arrived to the restaurant before Erica and I was a little taken back. The restaurant was empty lol. But once the hostess came over and I told her I was there for brunch and was meeting Erica, she quickly whisked me away downstairs to what is called “Donuts in the Den”. It’s a diner of sorts, but completely decked out in 1970’s swag. I’m talking shag covered furniture, wood paneling and lots of brown and orange. There was 70’s music blasting from the speakers and I thought I walked onto the set of the Austin Powers movie or Mark Wahlberg’s “Boogie Nights” lol. The space is just way too cool.
The menu for brunch is centered around donuts. You can find everything from single donuts to donut sandwiches. If you prefer to skip the donuts, one of the waffle iron hash browns is the way to go. The hominy hash has chorizo sausage, cotija cheese, sliced avocado and cilantro. You definitely get the Mexican vibe, but its pretty light on seasoning. The chili cheese is exactly what it sounds like. Hash browns are layered with chili, cheese, spicy jalapeno and scallions. Yum!!
The star of the show is the donuts of course. You can choose from four different donut sandwiches all with a unique and delicious spin. When browsing the menu, my eyes immediately went to the glazed chicken. Fried chicken and a fried egg is put between two plain donuts and sweet glaze is drizzled on top. It’s so bad but so good. The monte cristo is equally delicious and continues with the sweet and salty vibe. A plain donut is sliced in half and stuffed with ham, gruyère cheese, raspberry jam and then dusted powdered sugar.
Just when you think you’ve had enough donuts, nope the donut party continues. To top of the brunch we ordered the Irishman donut which is whiskey frosted and topped with chocolate espresso beans. It is also served with a shot of Irish Cream Liqueur. I honestly don’t think I even need to explain why you should try this. I mean…c’mon.
