Located at the top of the Hilton Hotel Downtown Atlanta on the 30th floor is the beautiful Nikolai’s Roof. This gorgeous AAA Diamond, fine dining restaurant offers breathtaking views of Atlanta from every inch of the restaurant. Opening in 1976, Nikolai’s Roof is an icon in Atlanta restaurant history and in addition to sweeping views, the menu is also refined and elegant.
My good friend and blogging bestie Erica Key, invited me a long with her to experience Nikolai’s Roof for the first time. We were both excited to indulge in all that the restaurant had to offer. The decor is bright and airy with off white chairs and walls of wine cabinets and the ambiance is intimate with low lighting.
The dishes on the menu can be ordered separately, but I suggest experiencing one of the Chef’s tasting menus. Enjoy either a three, four or six course meal at a pre-fixe price. This is ideal if you want to have a sample of several items. Erica and I ordered the three-course tasting so that we could order different items to share.
We started dinner with the carbonara risotto and the escargot tart. The risotto was prepared with Woodsman & Wife fromage blanc cheese, pancetta and English peas. Risotto can be difficult to prepare, but in this case it was cooked perfectly al dente. It was also very creamy but it did not leave you feeling heavy and full. The English peas added a fresh element to the dish, while the charred brussels sprout leaves gave it an earthy and smokey flavor.
The escargot was cooked with caramelized onions and was laid a top a puff pastry with a creamy parmesan cheese spread. The escargot was tender, flavorful and I really enjoyed it as a tart versus the typical sautéed dish you see on a lot of menus.
As we were headed into the second course, our server brought out a palate cleanser. When you eat dishes with strong flavors, its good to kind of rid your palate of those flavors in preparation for what you are going to enjoy next. A sorbet of pineapple and jalapeno lime which was cool and refreshing but it had a gentle kick from the jalapeno, was topped off with a lime infused vodka that was delicious.
The second course consisted of beef tenderloin and the herb crusted lamb chops. The beef tenderloin was cooked medium and melted in your mouth. It was served on a bed of broccolini, burnt garlic, fingerling potatoes and drizzle of a port wine demi glace sauce.
The herb crusted lamb chops were also cooked medium and the flavorful herb crust on the outside gave it a slight crunch. It was served with a farro, mushroom and sweetbread croquette that was mind-blowing. The croquette was crispy on the outside, yet hearty on the inside. Both dishes were phenomenal and I really enjoyed the layering of flavors and the combination of textures.
No meal is complete without dessert. Erica is obsessed with cheese and I am obsessed with chocolate, so we were both able to order something to satisfy our obsessions. Presentation is everything at Nikolai’s Roof, down to the desserts. Our server wheeled out a huge cheese tray where we were able to select from various local and global artisan cheeses, which were then paired with various jams, nuts and my favorite the truffle honey.
The frozen dark chocolate mousse was served with a toasted coconut ice cream and tuile with a sugary feuilletine crisp. The mousse had a mild chocolate taste and the coconut ice cream also had a mild coconut flavor. However, the dessert was light which is what we needed after a couple of courses.
Nikolai’s Roof is ideal for a special occasion like an anniversary or birthday dinner. While we were there we even saw a few students having dinner before they headed to prom. I recommend leaving the kiddies at home as the setting is more for adults and it’s quite intimate.
The service is impeccable which is what should be expected for a restaurant of this caliber. The presentation and innovative flavors of the dishes at Nikolai’s Roof will definitely have me come back to further explore the menu. Thank you for the invite Erica!! 🙂
