I don’t know about anyone else, but I am so excited that Fall is just over the horizon. The leaves are changing, the weather gets cooler and you can indulge in cocktails that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I like to consider myself a “home mixologist” so I was intrigued when offered the chance to try the botanical gift set from The Spice Lab.  With 6 botanicals, The Spice Lab’s cocktail kits are an easy way to add a little something different to your favorite spirit.

There are a variety of sets to choose from which includes rum, gin, and vodka. I was able to choose a kit to try and since I’d recently been introduced to Toppers Rhum, I thought that the botanicals in the rum kit would pair well.

The rum cocktail kit came with 6 botanicals which included cinnamon, cocoa seeds, allspice, coffee beans, nutmeg, dried orange peel and a citrus peeler.

I was never a big rum drinker unless it was in a daiquiri. Since being introduced to Toppers Rhum several months ago, I’ve grown to really love it. Toppers is smooth, tastes fantastic over ice and the flavors do not taste artificial. Since on the rocks or chilled is how I prefer to enjoy Toppers, I decided to use the mocha mama which has a delicious chocolate flavor. I paired the rum with a few coffee beans and cocoa seeds which made the drink really aromatic. There is the faint smell of coffee mixed with the sweet smell of cocoa. I then garnished it with a few pieces of the dried orange peel.

The kits are on the pricey side ranging from $69.95-$199.95. But you can certainly make this at home for much less.

Ingredients Needed:

  • 2oz of Mocha Mama Toppers Rhum
  • 3 Coffee Beans
  • 1 Cocoa Seed
  • Orange peel
  • Ice

In a shaker, combine Toppers Rhum, coffee beans, cocoa seed and ice. Shake well. Strain into a wide mouth glass (or enjoy on the rocks). Garnish with orange peel, coffee beans and cocoa seeds.

Tip: Instead of the dried orange peel, take the peel of a fresh orange and rub it around the rim of your glass. Then toss it in as a garnish.
